Who knew what would happen when an MTV science project took on a life of its own to become the not-so-fictional boy band 2gether?
The 1999 MTV movie [actually it was February of 2000] "2gether" told the story of the po-music group and its lovable manager, Bob Buss. For the movie, the fictional group recorded several songs for an accompanying soundtrack, including "U+Me=Us (Calculus)." The movie and song were such big hits that "2gether" became an MTV series, and the group became as popular as some of its real boy-band bretheren. The band may be fictional, but the fans' devotion to the guys certainly isn't.
The popular show's ensamble cast includes Evan Farmer as Jerry O'Keefe, Kevin Farley as Doug Linus, Noah Bastian as Chad Linus, Michael Cuccione as Jason "Qt" McKnight, and Alex Solowitz as Mickey Parke. Each acknowledges he was somewhat surprised by how the 2gether concept has taken off. Kevin, in particular, was shocked when *NSYNC recreated the moves of 2gether's "U+Me=Us (Calculus)" on "Total Request Live."
"The dance has caught on all over," he said, "Kids come up to us and they do all the signals and everything. It's flattering, but at the same time it's a little frightening. People like us as a joke, but they also like us as a band."
In late August 2000, 2gether released a new CD, "Again." The disc features more clever hits like "The Hardest Part Of Breaking Up (Is Getting Back Your Stuff)," which gets a lot of play on Nickelodeon and Radio Disney.
So, what would these actors be doing if they hadn't become famous in a fictional boyband?
"I'm definitely going to keep pursuing television and film until it's no longer fun for me," said Evan. "But if I weren't doing it, I ould probably be doing something really exciting. I skydive, so I would open up my own drop zone or something."
