I'll try and write this with as little spoilers as possible, thus it will be quite short and only giving you a brief idea.
Kagome Higurashi is just a ordinary school girl in modern time. Next to her home is an ancient well called the bone-settlers well. One day, her little brother was looking for the cat near the well, but he was
afraid of the dark, thus Kagome went to help him. This is where Kagome's adventures began. A Centipede youkai (demon) popped up from the well and pulled her down, she did not realise that she had the shikon no tama (jewel of the four souls) within her body as
she is said to be the reincarnation of Kikyou from the sengoku jidai (ancient times)
Entering the well, she was sent back into the sengoku jidai, which was approximately 500 years back, where youkai still roamed the country. There she met Inuyasha and freed him from the arrow that secured him against the sacred tree before Kikyou's death.
However, Kaede (Kikyou's younger sister) knew Inuyasha would not listen easily, thus forced him to wear a sacred necklace where whenever Kagome cries "OSUWARI" (sit) he will crash onto the floor, thus he had to listen to her and help her.
As for the shikon on tama, Kagome accidentally shattered it into pieces while in a fight with a crow youkai, thus they had to set out to collect all the shikon shards. Most ended up with Youkais such as Naraku and Inuyasha had to fight
endlessly to achieve the shards. However, for Inuyasha, killing Naraku is his main goal as he killed his beloved Kikyou.
