USB Cable--
Check out the cables on EBay. You do not have to purchase a CD-ROM/cable
package, the USB cable (by itself) is perfectly fine. So far as I know,
everything on the CD-ROM can be downloaded for free. Most EBay stores seem to
charge almost nothing for the cable, but tack on $5 for S&H, so maybe consider
getting 2 or 3 cables (as spares or for work or for your significant other or
whatever). Note -- there have been many reports that FUTURE DIAL and RADIO SHACK
cables do not work for this, you can generally identify them because they have a
little black box in the middle of the cable that does something tricky & bad to
the signal. Other 3rd-party cables are generally OK, they should just look like
a plain black wire with a USB connector on one end and the special Motorola
connector for your phone on the other end.
Software--
All software listed here can be downloaded for free from motclub.com, either in
the "Drivers" area or "Programs" area. I'd recommend downloading all this
software to one directory (perhaps c:\downloads\motorola), this may make
searching for drivers a bit easier. . . . Download the following:
1) P2K Driver (Vxxx phones are all "Motorola platform 2000" based) - the basic
USB driver for your phone.
2) Motorola Product Support Tool (PST 6.7) - powerful software. Loads a bunch
more drivers. You need to use this once to change a setting in your phone to
load Java apps (games!)
3) Motorola mobile Phone Tools (mPT) - provides an interface to Outlook, also
includes it's own computer phone book. Allows transfer of jpegs & sound files
between phone & computer.
4) Midway - use to upload games (Java .JAD files) to your computer.
Software Installation--
1) P2K driver -- required to get your cable working. Once you extract the
files (just drop them in the same directory you downloaded to), plug in the
phone. Should automatically launch the "detected new hardware" wizard. DON'T let
Windows search for the driver, point it to the folder with P2K. If set up
correctly, you should be able to go into Control Panel, select Phones and
Modems, locate the Motorola Modem (your phone looks like a modem to the
computer, and can actually be used as a wireless modem if you have a dial-up
account), and check that basic communications has been established using the
"Query Modem" function. See the motclub guide for additional details (note - the
motclub installation guide is in the "Guides" area, not in the "Drivers" area!!!
That's not real clear on the Drivers page where you download the driver).
2) PST 6.7 -- Running this program once will again launch the "new
hardware" wizard and will set up a bunch of drivers. In addition, to configure
your phone to allow uploading Java games, you'll need to use this program to
make a one-time setting change to your phone (which makes the "LOAD JAVA APPS"
command appear on your phone). See
http://viciousglitch.tripod.com/motorola.htm for details -- one thing that's
NOT clear there, though, is how to determine what Com port your phone's using --
you can determine that from the Control Panel modem window mentioned above under
step 1 (P2K). Careful with this program -- you can also seriously screw your
phone up with it!!! Don't be scared of running PST, but don't do too much
playing around and random button pressing here either! Same thing with the "new
hardware" wizard here -- just keep pointing it to the directory where you
downloaded all this software, DON'T let Windows choose the driver for you
automatically.
3) Motorola "mobile Phone Tools" (aka "mpt")--
Pay attention (!!!) to the
installation instructions here:
a. Download & install version 1.23c -- But DON'T RUN IT OR CONNECT YOUR PHONE!!!
b. Download & run the version 2.16 update. Run the update.
c. DON'T CONNECT YOUR PHONE YET!!!
d. Run mpt. When requested to register, just hit "register later". Don't worry about registering, once you run it you'll find out that it's already registered. DON'T CONNECT YOUR PHONE YET!!!
e. Mpt should eventually pop up a connection wizard. Click "USB". Sit & stare at your screen for a while as it sets up communication with your phone.
f. Try running Live Update (found under the settings menu in mpt). Didn't work from behind the firewall at my office, but worked fine from home. As of today, there appears to be a version 2.19a and 2.20 available. I don't see much difference between them and 2.16, but you might as well get the latest software if you can, I guess.
g. Wait for the display on your computer to STOP saying "Initializing. . ." before you play with the program. ALSO -- look for a little red alarm icon on your computer, if you see that it means there's bad communications going on. RECOMMENDED that you turn your computer's sound on (if you can), the drivers give a little beep when the phone connects, and a different beep if communications drop.
h. Computer-phone connections generally don't seem to be very stable. Try disconnecting/reconnecting your phone, or power cycling it. Communications do seem to improve after a while (maybe that's just wishful thinking).
4. Midway -- See http://viciousglitch.tripod.com/motorola.htm. Use this to upload games to the phone.
Helpful Links--
http://motclub.com/
Has all software you need, along with guides, games & music downloads,
heavy-duty technical information, etc. In Spanish and somewhat technical, but
THE BEST resource for Motorola phones even if you've never heard a word of
Spanish in your life.

This is a link to motclub.com , but translated into bad English by Google.
Better than nothing if you don't speak any Spanish.
