This documentation has been put together to help owners of the Motorola V400 cell phone enter their own monophonic ringtones.

What is a monophonic ringtone?  A monophonic ringtone relies on one instrument (or sound) only and usually plays the main melody of a song.  So, how do you get these into your Motorola V400 cell phone?  The first thing you need to do is find the Ringtone Text Transfer Language (RTTTL format) for a ringtone you like. On the web, they are often referred to as "Nokring", "RTTTL", sometimes mistakenly RTTL (there are really 3 "T") or simply "Nokia" ringtones.

Picking a Ringtone
Now, before you go running off already confused, this is much simpler than it sounds.  You can scour the internet for them, or you can try checking out a couple of the links I've included below.

I'm sure there are many other sites out there that are far better than these. However, these are the only ones I've used up to this point.

You will know it's a Nokia/RTTL ringtone because compared to other ringtone formats, a Nokia RTTTL format ringtone is always composed of 3 parts:

1) First, the name of the song, followed by a colon.
2) Then, a few tempo and scale indications such as "o=4", followed by another colon.
3) Finally, the actual ringtone, composed of a series of text notes (such as "4a8") separated by commas.

Below, you will find an example of the Nokia RTTTL format for the baseball theme song, "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."

Baseball Theme Take Me Out To The Ballgame:d=4,o=5,b=200:2c, c6, a, g, e, 2g., 2d., 2c, c6, a, g, e, 1g., a, g#, a, e, f, g, 2a, f, 2d., 2a, a, a, b, c6, d6, b, a, g, f, d, 2c, c6, a, g, e, 2g., 2d., 2c, d, e, f, g, 1a, a, b, 2c.6, 2c.6, c6, b, a, g, f#, g, 2a., 2b., 1c.6

OK, now that you've found the Nokia RTTTL format for the ringtone you'd like to add to your cell phone, highlight and copy the ENTIRE block of code.  We will now need to convert this to the proper format needed for the Motorola v400.

Converting Nokia RTTTL to Motorola Format
Using Uniring - The Free Universal Ringtone Converter (click on the link to access this free, online application), scroll down to Step #2 and paste the RTTTL in the text box provided.

Click on the "Convert it Now!" link.

You will then need to select the most appropriate format for your phone.  Scroll down to the Motorola section and click on the "Motorola Keypress IV" link.

The next window that appears will give you the option to increase/decrease the Tempo of the ringtone (making if faster/slower) and the option to reduce or increase the Pitch of the ringtone (making it sound higher/lower).  Leave the Maximum SMS message length set at 130 and click the "convert it now" link.

The next page that opens will appear similar to the example below.  Here, the only thing you care about is the second part of Step #2 (where it reads, "And it should appear on the screen as follows: ").  In this example, you would want to enter the *1c1 *2c2 *1a2 g2... into your cell phone.  Now, how do you do that you ask???  Read on....

How to enter the converted code into the Motorola V400 cell phone
So, now that you've picked your favorite ringtone and you converted the Nokia RTTTL formatted code into the proper Motorola format, you can now enter it into your cell phone.  From your Motorola V400 cell phone, follow the directions below:

  1. Press the Menu Key.
  2. Select the Multimedia icon.
  3. Select the Sounds icon.
  4. Scroll down to the very bottom and select [New iMelody]. This will open the Tone Details window.
  5. The Tone Details window will have two sections, Notes and Name.  To begin adding the actual notes, make sure Notes is selected (highlighted) and click the Change button.
  6. Begin adding the * Notes by typing them in using your keypad.  Enter the notes EXACTLY as it appears above, however do NOT add any spaces (these are only provided to make it easier to read).  In the example above, you would begin by entering *1c1*2c2...
  7. After you have completed entering all the notes, click the OK button.
(Note: To preview the song, from the Notes screen, press the Menu Key and select the Play All option.)
  8. Scroll down to the Name section and click the Change button.
  9. Using your keypad, enter a ringtone name and click the OK button.
  10. When you are done, press the Done button.

Now, if you choose to preview the ringtone,  you will most probably find that the song does not sound exactly perfect.  Some manual changes may be needed (but are not always necessary).  You can edit the ringtone by following the same steps above, but it would be helpful to understand how to read the Notes, right?

How to edit the ringtone notes to make it sound right
Review the notes  below to learn how to read/change the notes you've already entered.

  • You can enter a note by pressing the up/down scroll.
  • A note can also be entered using the key associated with the note letter. i.e.- E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F
  • Change octaves using the 0 key to insert a '*' followed by the octave number, followed by the note. i.e.- *5b2 would be a higher b
  • Insert a flat '&' or a sharp '#' using 0 key before the note.
  • Change duration by inserting 0-5 after the note. Modify duration 1+1/2="." or by 1+3/4=':' or by 2/3=';' using 1 key after the note.
  • Insert a rest 'r' using the 7 key.
  • Scroll left/right using the '*' and '#' keys.
