Makerere University Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (MUIENR) was set up in 1987 as a result of the University's direct response from conservationists, researchers and members of the public to have an institution of higher learning that would train professionals in the field of natural resource management and conservation.
Since 1987, the level of activities have expanded and to date, MUIENR has produced a sizable community of professionals in various sectors related to environmental conservation, both at home and abroad. MUIENR is commited to environmental conservation, and has participated in a number of activities geared towards conserving Uganda's biodiversity, as well as contributing to global efforts.
Among MUIENR's activities are:
- Training students and professionals in fields related to natural resources management
- Establishment and development of a fully functional Remote Sensing/GIS Lab
- Establishment and development of the National Biodiversity Data Bank
- Establishment and development of the Wildlife Genetics Lab with kind funding from DANIDA
- Participation in various fora on conserving Uganda's and the global environment
- Undertaking various tasks on behalf of government agencies and NGOs meant to enhance environmental conservation
