CYBERCRIME-HACKING
Web Site Defacement Winner Announced
Source: EWeek.com
Last weekend's highly-publicized "hacking contest" has a
winner. Perfect.br, a well-known Brazilian hacking group was awarded
152 points, while its nearest competitor could amass only 62 points.
The contest awarded points for each website defacement, with sites
running on less popular operating systems counting for more points.
However, the biggest news of the contest was that the designated
scorekeeper, a website defacement monitor, Zone-H.org, was itself
hacked. A group claimed responsibility for the hack in a note posted
on SecurityNewsPortal.com. Zone-H.org was hit with a distributed
denial of service that lasted many hours Sunday, leaving the site
completely unreachable.

VULNERABILITY
Study: WiFi users still don't encrypt
Source: Security Focus
Security vendor, AirDefense, discovered that the majority of Wi-Fi
users are checking their email through unencrypted POP connections.
AirDefense experimented by setting up two of its commercial
"AirDefense Guard" sensors at opposite corners of a room
in the Boston World Trade Center, the site of the 802.11 Planet Expo
conference. For two days, the company analyzed the traffic flowing
between conference-goers and 141 unencrypted access points set up by
the conference for public use, and by vendors on the floor. As a
sponsor and the "official security provider" at the
conference, AirDefense posted signs informing the public that
AirDefense was monitoring all conference traffic. Eighty-eight
percent of the email downloads were unencrypted and could easily be
intercepted by eavesdroppers using commonly-available tools,
compromising both the e-mail and the user's passwords. http://www.securityfocus.com/news/6290
