Seeking Excellence in Math Education

FACT: The State Education Dept. of California rejected Fuzzy math in 1997. The Massachusetts State Board of Education threw out Fuzzy math in 2000. In 2001, the City of New York forced Harold Levy, Chancellor of Schools, to promise that Fuzzy math would be largely eradicated. Surely, it's past time for Utah to do the same! We need a responsive school district.

Imagine, if other school subjects were to devalue skills and accuracy as much as Investigations and Connected Mathematics, then you could encounter this...

  • Ever hear of James Washington? Well, you should have. He helped found our country in 1773, at least in new new history.
  • "It were the best of times; it were the worst of times." Why use was when were is close enough, at least in fuzzy English?
  • Be grateful your kids aren't learning fuzzy music. But, as long as they're only off key by one or two notes, things should sound just fine.
  • Yes, we know this is silly. But, if we can instantly recognize this truth for English, music and history, then why not for math, the most rational of all subjects, whose very "integrity rests on precision?" For the vast majority of us, the main reason for learning math "is to be able to compute accurately," then why not for our children?

So here is our quandary. Thus far the Alpine School District, has not acknowledged our well-founded concerns or given us any choices. In fact, they next intend to force fuzzy math upon our high schools. When James Washington (-whoops George) struggled to found this magnificient country, it was largely over the matter of having a choice.

We feel strongly that new new math is detrimental to our children's future, as documented. We do know some parents who like its unusual approach. And so we respect their wishes. However, these are our schools too; we only wish the school district felt that way. So we implore Alpine, to do the right thing, and offer our children a guaranteed choice, a choice of math that is skills-based, "college preparatory work," so kids can choose to succeed.

We ask you to join us, in calling upon Superintendent Vernon Henshaw and our elected school board to provide appropriately rigorous, mathematics classes so our kids are prepared for when the future does come, because "Kids Do Count!"
