not altogether unexpectedly

JiP is a pop-oriented rock band from San Diego. Brad Teaby is the front-man: singer, songwriter, and guitar-player, his talents are the group's driving force. Paul Denton plays bass, as part of his ongoing mission to be in more bands than anyone else in San Diego. Ken "Snits 'stripey-pants' Fingle" Kenworthy (don't ask) plays drums. Lead guitars are from Mike Keneally, well-known both for his solo work and for his extensive work with Frank Zappa (and sons). "Not altogether unexpectedly" is a follow-up to JiP's 1994 debut "Glee", and includes additional drumming by Kofi Baker, son of well-respected drummer Ginger Baker.

Red Tape's involvement ranged from doing post-production work on a couple of vocal tracks to extensive mixing, editing, sound design, and composition. Fourier transform analysis helped with the design of digital processing that would compensate for the varied ambience of different studio locations.

"Waiting So Long" features custom digital sound design work on Kenneally's guitars. The tracks were processed many times, in different ways, then layered against the original for a uniquely tailored effect. "Call It A Day" also contains this detailed work on the lead guitar tracks, as well as some over-dubbing to augment the vocals. "Cloudless" also benefits from vocal over-dubbing, but with the added twist: performing a layered sound design process on the vocal track itself gives the later harmonizing work its pleasantly ethereal quality. "Throw It Away" needed some equalization to normalize it with the other tracks, and the introduction draws from Max's personal banks of individually constructed samples.
