Welcome to the OpenSource P2P Net!
"Information wants to be truly free"
to start downloading the file while you read on... (Gnucleus.exe 900K from this mirror)
The main site is at sourceforge.net , this is a mirror site.
The OpenSource P2P Net allows open source, no profit clients to connect and share files.
The #1 rule on the network is that no one can make money from the software used to share files. All clients that
profit from file sharing are blocked. Only open source no profit clients are allowed to connect.
Greed makes the network vulnerable to corporate attack, it's the last weak point for big corporations to
attack. People give their bandwidth, personal time and computer resources when sharing files, wouldn't it
be nice to know that your efforts weren't going to pay for corporate overhead or new corporate cars? Greed
is bad for a true, open and free P2P file sharing network. Profit motivates marketing departments to send
you pop-up ads and try to track you on the web, what will they do to P2P? Companies will do anything to get
you to visit their own shopping site so lame internal browsers are included that only go to their site.
Open, free source code is available that does everything needed to share files successfully, no reason to
write the same code over and over then charge for it. All the improvements to P2P came from open free
discussion on the net. The OpenSource P2P Net will be the only truly free P2P file sharing network left
after all the corporate lawsuits are over.
Until authors release new versions of their clients, a modified Gnucleus version is available here.
Quick Note for the NEW VERSION! 03/29/2002 (I will fix this page up later)
Just replace the Gnucleus.exe file in your Programs-Gnucleus folder.
You now have a choice!
Features:
* Connects to the OpenSource P2P Net by default
* Still works as a Gnutella client, with or without blocking
* You control all aspects of blocking, it's your choice!
* Network type, name and blocking settings are all via the GUI
* Move around the network to find rare files!
* Selectively block clients that are causing problems
* Selectively block clients to move around the clustered net
* Block all for profit clients with one push of a button
* Find out for yourself that you don't need commercial clients to share files!
* Change from OpenSource P2P Net to Gnutella from the GUI
* Create a custom network name, start your own private network!
* Avoid your sys-admin if packet sniffers are looking for "GNUTELLA"
* Default lists of clients included to help select blocking
* All this and it's free! No Greed!
* Static host catchers now reload properly with delay
* Internal host cache is now larger so it's harder to run dry
Checked with the latest norton antivirus.
Please be patient with the new OpenSource P2P Net, it will take
a little while to develop more nodes on the network. You can help
by running yours 24/7 or as long as possible. Enable for profit
client blocking and you will still be able to get/share files
with all the non profit clients!
This was about 40+ hours of work & testing.
Kudos to whoever put up a static IP server at 24.234.19.159:6347
very handy! Thanks!
And thanks to Simeon for providing a Linux version!
Quick Install Instructions: (THIS NEEDS UPDATING FOR THE NEW VERSION!)
If you know Windows well, read on, it's easy. If not, skip to the next section.
Basicly we will be replacing the old Gnucleus.exe program file with the modified version you just downloaded.
You should have already been running Gnucleus and know it works fine. You can create a new folder to run it in
or just use the new modified one. If you use a new folder, make a copy of the existing folder and rename it.
You should delete the file "GnuCache.net". Double click on the new Gnucleus program and have fun!
Find a IP at
gnutellaforums.com and enter it as a host cache or add it as a node.
Post your IP back. Go to Edit-> Preferences and turn off "Auto-Evolve Gnucleus" and set your port if needed.
Full long instructions to install the new modified Gnucleus 1.6.3 program:
NOTE: Make a copy of the contents of your current "Gnucleus" folder, and rename it to "Gnucleus2"
You will be able to run two copies at the same time, one normal and one on the OpenSource P2P Net for now.
Use "Windows Explorer" to delete the file "Gnucleus.exe" and "GnuCache.net" in the new "Gnucleus2" folder.
Download this modified Gnucleus Program EXE file
Gnucleus.exe (900K)
Cut and Paste it into the new "Gnucleus2" folder if you didn't download it to that folder already.
The new EXE file is only the executable program, it needs all the other files in the folder to work.
Connect to the Internet, then double click on the new "Gnucleus.exe" program to start it.
Now we will replace the old static host cache servers, and turn off auto evolve.
Quickly go to the top menu Edit-> Preferences-> Connect-> Servers and then
right click on each
server name and select "Remove".
Now enter any new IP addresses into the "Host:", and port number into "Port:" then click "Add"
This prevents them from getting deleted. As the network grows you won't need to do this.
New IPs are posted to
gnutellaforums.com , check there.
IMPORTANT! Post your IP! (and port number) to
gnutellaforums.com
in the "General" posting area under this subject.
Is it safe to post your IP? Yes, if you are already using Gnucleus (or others) your IP is everywhere!
Post your IP even if you are a modem user! I am working on a new static host cache from this server!
Go to Edit-> Preferences-> Connect-> Local and then
un-select "Auto-Evolve Gnucleus." and
if you plan to run two copies of Gnucleus, you should set this new one "Set incoming port" to 6347.
You can share the same files from your "shared" folder, just change the Preference settings.
Run this 24/7 if possible. You should get connected quickly and it will stay that way. If no nodes respond, they
may be down or their IP has changed. Check the forum for new IPs (new host cache to be here!).
Thanks for participating in the new OpenSource P2P Net!
Some Details:
Most people won't need to know the following, you can skip this.
The OpenSource P2P Net is based on the Gnutella protocol with the "GNUTELLA CONNECT" string
changed to "OPENSOURCE CONNECT" also anywhere that "GNUTELLA" is found in
a connect header.
This separates the open source network from the original (and now commercialized) gnutella network.
The more people that run clients 24/7, the more files will be available. There may be days where no one is
online at first, but please stick with it.
If you lose all connections, type a IP from the forum into the "Connections Advanced" box and
click "Add". Once you type the IP in it will stay in the little box and you can just click "Add"
again if you lose it again.
Some people are having problems with the
IRC Chat Servers being used as a static host cache, this
is a problem because IRC considers Gnucleus a "BOT" and bots are not allowed on most IRC servers.
IRC servers were not meant to be used this way, and you will be banned from some so I will be creating a new host
cache system here.
If you want to disable all IRC connections, just edit the file "GnuServers.ini" and remove any chat server names.
Info: "Network" should be set to the default "Regular Node on the Internet". Everything else is the same.
The format of the "GnuServers.ini" file for host connection IPs will look like this as you add more:
(these are NOT current valid IPs! Example only)
[Connect Servers]
Server1=64.143.256.74:6347
Server2=207.124.234.192:6347
