On September 16, 1999, a tropical rainstorm of unprecedented proportions struck the town of Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras, provoking flooding in eleven neighborhoods and leaving 1,231 people affected. Specifically, 193 homes were affected, of which 30 were destroyed, 95 damaged, and 68 merely flooded. This project proposes to reduce the vulnerability of the highest risk sector, the neighborhood of El Calvario (notwithstanding that other neighborhoods are also at risk) and consists of the construction of 300 meters (984 feet) of gabion retention walls to avoid landslides, blocked drains and stream beds, and flooding during the rainy season.
