The current school buildingAlthough the central government is legally responsible for the construction of school buildings in Honduras, in reality budget constraints make it virtually impossible for places without school buildings to obtain them. In Barrio Centenario, a low income neighborhood of Santa Rosa de Copán, a local donor loaned a building rent free for use as a school two years ago, allowing the Ministry of Education to open the Esteban Guardiola Elementary School. Unfortunately, the building is structurally unsound and places the thirty students and one teacher at risk. This risk is so imminent that many neighborhood parents refuse to send their children to school. The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa de Copán proposes to construct a modern school in the neighborhood on property donated specifically for this purpose.
