Restoration of City Playground

To restore the deteriorated city playground of Santa Rosa de Copán to a like new and safe condition.

As the only public playground in this city of 20,000, the park should play an important role in the recreation and socialization of its more than 6,000 children under 12, over half of whom come from families at or below the poverty line and for whom few other options for healthy recreation exist. Unfortunately, the park's deteriorated state poses a danger to unsupervised play and is thus closed all but the one day a week the city can afford to pay a watchman to be present. We propose to make the park once again safe for children, and at the same time make it even more inviting with fresh paint and the installation of new and attractive play equipment.

Specifically, this project shall:

Replace the crumbling perimeter fence posts, eliminating the danger of its collapse
Repair rusted, weakened swings
Sand and repaint all equipment and installations with anticorrosive paint
Add new play equipment

It should be added that the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa has already:

Sponsored a series of "Rotary Sundays" in the park, in which Rotarians performed simple maintenance and repair (mowing the grass, painting, etc.) while their families sold hot meals and snacks to the public.
Taking advantage of the park's high profile thus created, the club then used its contacts to convince a local business to donate new play equipment. The resulting exposure was so positive that the club was later approached by another organization wishing to do the same.
With the money generated by Rotary Sundays, the club's spouses' auxiliary replaced the playground's restrooms, which were inaugurated by our then District Governor.

As can be appreciated, the city playground has come to be firmly identified with Rotary. With this project we propose to build upon previous accomplishments to achieve something truly meaningful for Santa Rosa's underprivileged children.
