Some places to spend time, or waste it:

Find Stuff Out:

AlterNet. An alternative news source. (Come on, you know Newsweek is biased. :))

The Utne Reader. Creative, intelligent, and liberal (but not so political as to be dull), the magazine is fun and informative. Check it out. There are articles online--the site isn't just an ad.

The BBC News Online. Because there's less bull there, in my opinion, when it comes to international news. Plus, you can see what other people think of our policies! ;)

Commercial:
(No, I'm not getting anything for these plugs, I actually believe in the companies.)

Opera. An efficient, nice-looking browser which is free, untainted by Microsoft or AOL, and which is available for a number of platforms. (Mac, Windows, Linux)

Amusing:

Cruel Site of the Day. Ridicules strange websites. Said sites can be pretty offensive, be warned.

The Onion. "America's Finest News Source." A parody newspaper--I think it used to be funnier (or I was getting less sleep when I read it as a college freshman), but it's still entertaining.

Other:

The Hunger Site. A way to donate food to the hungry. Free. You click your mouse, their sponsors (like Dell) donate money for the food. There is a FAQ, if you're skeptical, and contact information for the charities involved. You don't have to sign up for anything. Check out the site; if you like it, tell people about it. Maybe it'll do some good?

Amnesty International (US site). An organization dealing with human-rights violations worldwide. Get information on current issues, here and elsewhere; find out ways to help. The general site is at www.amnesty.org.
