Towers of Commerce

These three structures represent the commercial ambitions and architectural reflections of Detroit at different time periods. Starting from the left is the Aztec Art Deco Guardian (formerly Unity Trust) Building.  Completed in 1929, the 36 story tower was the jewel of the financial district and was appropriately dubbed the "cathedral of finance". In the center is the recently completed Neo Gothic Comerica Tower. Designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee. This post modern addition to Detroit's historic skyline fits in nicely. The building on the left belongs to Bank One which is the former National Bank of Detroit. Erected in 1959 this structure replaced Detroit's first skyscraper, the Hammond Building.
